THE IGBOLANDING: THE UNSEALING OF AN UNPRECEDENTED INCIDENT OF 1803 OF IBO HEBOE SLAVES

In an 1803 unprecedented collective suicide incident unheard of on earth as at the time by newly imported slaves from the sub-Saharan has continued to baffle historians all over the world till date. To prove to the world that they are some ancient tribes people well established in freedom fighting and would choose death and rebellion in the face of any act of subjugation rather than serve men, took their own lives by drowning singing a song themed in a word which sounded like “CHWH/JHWH” or “CHuVWHu” or “CHukWHu”.

This group of Igbo (Heboe or Hibo or Ibo) captives who had survived the middle passage were sold near Savannah, Georgia, and reloaded onto a small ship bound for St. Simon’s Island. Off the coast of the island, the enslaved cargo, who had “suffered much by mismanagement”, “rose” from their confinement in the small vessel and revolted against the crew, forcing them into the water where they drowned. After the ship ran aground, the Igbos Heboes Hibos Ibos close to 100 in number singing in unison “took to the marsh” and drowned themselves, an act that most scholars have continued to understand to mean a deliberate collective suicide which rightly is an immortal message to the people of this world about who they are. They were Abolitionists, Freedom fighters, and those who abhor evil and any type of human enslavement. The site of their fatal collective immersion was name Ebo-Landing. The fate of those Igbos Heboes Hibos Ibos in 1803 gave rise to a distinctive regional folklore and a place seen as ‘The New-Goshen’ which would be the rallying of ‘The New Way’ from the wilderness called “HEBREWISM”.
